The Center for Basque Studies at UC Santa Barbara focuses on the teaching and study of the Basque Country’s rich history, culture, and language (euskara), and the diffusion of Basque culture in the U.S. Addressing topics such as the politics of identity and (self)representation, nationalism and nation-building, political conflict, cooperativism, neoliberalism, and migration from an interdisciplinary and intersectional perspective, the Center for Basque Studies offers students the opportunity to learn about and reflect on the challenges and accomplishments that drive a minoritized language and culture such as the Basque one in a globalized world.

In collaboration with the Etxepare Basque Institute, the Center for Basque Studies at UCSB offers funding opportunities to undergraduate students to conduct individual research projects on Basque subjects, and facilitates stays in the Basque Country to improve Basque language skills and get immersed in the Basque way of life and culture.
